Up! is the fourth studio album by Canadian vocaliser Shania Twain. It was released on November 19, 2002, by Mercury Nashville. Three versions of the album were released: a pop version (ruby disc), a land version (light-green disc), and a version in the style of Indian motion picture music (blue disc); all three discs contain exactly the same rail listing and characteristic distinctly identifiable picture labels (for case, Twain sports a cowboy hat on the light-green country disc.) In the U.s., Upwards! debuted at No. 1 with sales of 874,000 copies. On September 23, 2004, the RIAA certified Up! at 11× Platinum,[one] giving her the distinction of beingness the merely female person creative person to take three consecutive Diamond albums released in the United States. The anthology was promoted with interviews and boob tube performances including the Super Bowl XXXVII halftime evidence. It was further promoted with the successful Up! Tour, which visited North America and Europe, and 8 singles with each accompanied by a music video.

Writing and recording for the album took place across the globe. According to the album booklet, Twain and Lange wrote and recorded in Berlin, Rome, Vienna, Paris, Avignon, Provence, Milan, Dublin, the Bahamas (at the famous Compass Point Studios), The Grenadine Islands, and Mumbai.[two] For the blue international disc, the pair enlisted British-Asian music producers Simon and Diamond Duggal for production collaboration. Canadian folk music group Leahy provided group fiddles throughout the anthology.

Release and promotion [edit]

When the album was originally released, different regions received different versions of the anthology. North America received a two-disc ready, containing the carmine disc and the green disc. Well-nigh international markets received a 2-disc set, referred to every bit the "International Version," containing the cerise disc and the blue disc. Both two-disc versions comprise a note from Shania offering free downloads of whichever set of mixes not included (e.g. a download of the blue version is offered with the cherry-red/green set), for a limited fourth dimension on her website. Australia received both two-disc sets, with the cerise/green version being subtitled "U.S. Version".[3] [ better source needed ] The album was later re-released in some territories every bit a single-disc ready, containing only the red mixes, and an alternating comprehend with a red background.[four] [ better source needed ]

The red and green versions were released on vinyl in the United States and Europe on October 14, 2016.[5] [ better source needed ] They are sold separately, and are featured on translucent red and greenish vinyl, respectively. This marks the first time the green version was released physically in Europe.

Upon its release, the album received positive reviews from most music critics, based on an aggregate score of 72/100 from Metacritic.[half dozen] AllMusic editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine rated it 4.5/5 stars, praising Twain for: "writing well crafted songs as universal anthems, and so listeners can hear themselves within these tales."[8] Erlewine further commented that: "The anthology had big, polished, multipurpose hooks and large, sweeping emotions. This is Super-Size pop, as outsized and grandiose equally good pop should be", he concluded.[8] Matthew Bjorke from About.com rated it four-stars out of five and said that: "This 19 track opus is certain to please about fans of both pop and mod country."[seven] The Blender review was too positive, saying that: "Twain'southward songs are never deep, but they have hooks tattooed on their skin and harmonies that glow similar bar lights."[10] Too with a positive review, Billboard said that: "[It's] quintessential Shania, light as vapor, sweet as carbohydrate, rendered with personality and undeniable charisma. Expect precious metal."[11] Andrew Lynch from Entertainment.ie rated it iii-stars out of v and said that: "The songs, themselves, meanwhile, are as bland and one-dimensional as they were on the blast hit Come on Over, sassily upbeat stuff with a dash of girl ability thrown in for good measure out. A loftier proportion of them, even so, are also infuriatingly catchy – suggesting that Twain may well have some other global success on her easily."[12]

Chris Willman from Entertainment Weekly was largely positive with the anthology, gaving an "A" grade for the album, comparing the anthology to "ABBA's Gold without all the melancholy." He also complemented "the sheer exuberance and joy of craftsmanship in this double-Upward!-manship don't experience like mercenary insincerity. They resemble something like actual generosity... not to put too fine a point on it."[xiii] The PopMatters review was average, giving it six stars out of 10 and maxim that the album "got everything from trip the light fantastic numbers to ballads, and information technology'southward vintage Shania". The review farther said that: "Upward! is a sense of Twain trying – badly trying at all levels – to touch anybody, to express universal truths by artificial means: beats, tempos, instruments, etc."[fourteen] The review ended that: "Up! is likewise generic and emotionless for that level of multifariousness, but in a very real sense, Twain has taken country music to its next level of popularity where land and pop are virtually duplicate."[14] Robert Christgau on his Consumer Guide Review praised the tracks "I'chiliad Gonna Getcha Practiced! " and "Ka-Ching!".[fifteen] The Rolling Rock review was positive, rating it four-stars out of v and saying that: "Up! would be a knockout even if it were limited to its one disc of country music.... But the second, relentlessly kinetic pop disc is a revelation."[xvi] Jennifer Nine from Yahoo! Music rated it half dozen-stars out of ten, saying that: "'Up!' is not without its little oddities and delights." And ended that: "'Up!' takes on its all-things-to-all-wallets mission with real ambition."[18] Alanna Nash from Amazon was largely positive and concluded that: "In that location's something oddly hypnotic about much of this project, and it may exist simply hearing what Shania can exercise when she abandons the pretense of existence a country singer and concentrates on music. Phone call this a guilty pleasure—pop, country, or somewhere in between."[9]

Commercial performance [edit]

In its 3rd week, sales were however strong enough to top both charts again, selling more than 317,000 copies and beating Tim McGraw's Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors, which held the No. two spot for a second consecutive week.[20] The anthology remained at No. 1 afterward its fourth week of release, selling more than 373,000 copies. Its final reign on the all-genre chart was after its 5th calendar week. The album'southward v-week total solitary stands at an estimated 2,646,000 units.
